The introduction of powerful language-producing models from OpenAI to U.S. federal agencies using Microsoft’s Azure cloud service was announced by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) in a blog post on Wednesday.
Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, has now added support for large language models (LLMs) that power GPT-4, the latest and most sophisticated of the LLMs from OpenAI, as well as GPT-3, to Azure Government.
Since the launch of ChatGPT from OpenAI, in which Microsoft has a stake, the use of LLMs has seen tremendous growth. Businesses of all sizes and types are rushing to develop features using these models.
This marks the first time that Microsoft is bringing GPT technology to Azure Government, which offers cloud solutions to U.S. government agencies. It also represents a significant effort by a major company to make chatbot technology available to governments.
Previously, Microsoft offered access to LLMs through Azure OpenAI Services to Azure commercial cloud users, with a customer base of 4,500 as of May.
Government customers will now be able to leverage these language models for specific tasks such as content generation, language-to-code translation, and summarization, tailoring the models to their unique requirements.
